Su nombre proviene del náhuatl “ZACATL” que significa paja o zacate y “TLAN” lugar, por lo que de manera conjunta queda: “lugar donde abunda el zacate”. También conocido como “Zacatlán de las manzanas”, se encuentra localizado en la parte noreste del Estado, en la Sierra Norte de Puebla.
Su altitud promedio es de 2.150 metros sobre el nivel del mar, cuenta con un clima templado sub húmedo que caracteriza su particular belleza natural.
